About me
“My impactful style emits a vibrating nervous energy…” Highly experienced artist, commercial illustrator, graphic and web designer. Alongside commercial projects, I am continually developing my own artistic practice, travelling to remote parts of the world and immersing myself in different landscapes and cultures. Landscape painting and adventures in landscape; getting into the muck, drawing with pencil, charcoal and ink, exploring the visceral through expressive mark making, this represents the core foundation of my creative work. In the commercial realm I have worked predominantly on a freelance and self-employed basis; managed accounts, budgets, negotiated contracts, self-promotion and marketing, solid understanding of copyright and legal. Excellent communication skills; presents ideas persuasively strong selling and negotiation skills, able to work in consultation with clients to assess their needs and deliver finished projects that fulfil their requirements. Highly organised, excellent time management, committed to excellence in client service, innovative, progressive and forward thinking with good interpersonal skills combined with a friendly manner. Works effectively and efficiently as part of a team while maintaining excellent individual motivation. Most importantly, I am a devoted father of three.

Times Educational Supplement - Editorial - 2010Illustration for Times Educational Supplement TES column titled Yoofspeak, exploring modern slang terminology in the classroom. Title: Peng (n) Means: A person that is good looking. Usage: "There's some peng over there"; "He/she is proper peng." Usurping the long-standing champion 'fit' in the overly sexualised playground lexicon, 'peng' has become the go-to word for any savvy pupil looking to publicly display their attraction to a member of their class, school or wider social circle. But don't be fooled into thinking it's a blast of intellectual slang utilising the Chinese symbol meaning 'great accomplishment'. It's actually said to be an abbreviation of the terminally cute aquatic animal, the penguin.

Over the past decade I have been commissioned by a wide variety of clients from advertising, editorial and publishing, fashion houses, music industry, museums and galleries. My impactful style emits a vibrating nervous energy, imbued with dark humour and light. It is a careful fusion of traditional medium and modern digital techniques, which combine hand-rendered drawing, dirt, paint, paper collage and digital textures layered with striking colour. Overview and summary of creative work: In the advertising sector, I worked with the London based Lunar BBDO / AMV BBDO. Tasked with conceiving, designing and building their company web site. The site was a showcase for their client side portfolio. Illustrated numerous articles and magazine covers for The Big Issue, British Medical Journal, Leftlion Magazine, Times Educational Supplement and Haymarket. Fast paced, rapid turn around within 12-24 hours. Evolved a process of pulling strong visual ideas from text, followed by rapidly working up roughs. Client is involved in all aspects of this process. Worked with Paul Smith Clothing, my artwork was featured on ranges of t-shirts, hoodies and sweaters for his Japanese and U.S markets. Ministry of Sound Recordings and EMI Music Publishing commissioned me to develop art work for the electronic band Bent. The work spanned three years, worked on initial EP releases and debut album Programmed to Love. Developed animated illustrative content for their web site, as well as merchandise and gig flyers. It was critical I understood musically where the band was coming from on a technical and artistic level. It was important for me to feel what they did, in oder to produce art work which complemented the band. Responsibilities include: • Liaising with clients and attending meetings to discuss a creative project brief • Negotiation of contracts and project fees • Allocation of copyright and Legal • Managing accounts and project budgets • Self-promotion and marketing via electronic media, direct marketing and cold calling • Research and development • Execution of initial concept sketches depicting ideas • Working up finished artwork, animation and/or web pages to client brief on budget to deadline Areas of expertise: • Excellent artwork skills and attention to detail. • Excellent drawing, typographical and layout skills. • Strong conceptual thinker with a unique ability to draw creative solutions from strategy. • Experience of web based languages; including Action Script, CSS, HTML, Java Script and PHP. • Fluent in the function of Adobe Creative Suite; including After Effects, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, InDesign, Photoshop and Premier. • Other programs and applications include FontLab, Fontographer, Freehand and QuarkXPress.
