About me
I am a consultant, writer and lecturer in professional practice for illustrators. Although I originally trained and practiced for a short time as a graphic designer, I became an illustrators' agent in 1983. Subsequent to running my own agency, where I supplied commissioners in advertising, design, editorial and publishing, I have worked part-time as a publishing rep for four others concurrently with my role as portfolio consultant at the Association Of Illustrators. I also offer private consultations to non-AOI members. To date I have delivered workshops in 60 UK art institutions.These range from one-off lectures outlining the rudiments of freelancing to more intensive workshops spread across three or four days. Group or individual student portfolio consultations are a component of both. Subjects covered in intensive workshops include:- • A detailed overview of the commissioning spheres. • Portfolio presentation and development. • Conducting business professionally with commissioners. • Constructing a CV and covering letter. • The Role of agents. • Self promotion through websites, blogging and social media. • Interviews and effective methods of introduction. I am a regular speaker at AOI seminars and master classes and have also taken part in educational events organised by Grafill Norway, Children''s Illustrators Ireland, Cockpit Arts, Creative Alliance West Midlands, UCAS and The Artist's And Illustrator's Magazine. In addition I have been a mentor at events organised by The Dots and D&AD. My book, How To Create A Portfolio And Get Hired, published by Laurence King, is currently in its second edition. I am also a regular contributor to The Writers' And Artists' Yearbook, published by Bloomsbury.
