Pre-Raphaelite Sisters / National Portrait Gallery

  • Susanna Foppoli

Publication designed to accompany the exhibition ‘Pre-Raphaelite Sisters’ at the National Portrait Gallery in London.⁣ ⁣ Even though most of the Pre-Raphaelite art was created by men, women played an essential part, working as artists in their own right, and as models, muses and creative partners.⁣ ⁣ The book starts with a 100-year timeline, followed by artists’ profiles and essays. Elegant chapter openers are set in SangBleu Empire, a high-contrast display typeface blending modern features with contemporary details, which emphasises the book’s fresh take on the subject.⁣ ⁣ The cover features a detail from Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s much-loved ‘Proserpine’, with gold foil contrasting beautifully with the blue velvet robes of Rossetti’s model and lover, Jane Morris. Designed under the creative direction of partner Astrid Stavro at Pentagram.
