About

The brainchild of Joanna Payne who founded the club in her living room in 2015, Marguerite is the club for women who work in the visual arts. Through our programme of 40 events/year, Marguerite aims to advance the careers of women in the industry by providing a ready-made professional network and spaces in which to hear from some of the most influential people working in the creative industries today. After seven years of working in the art world, for leading organisations including Whitechapel Gallery and Frieze Art Fair, Joanna felt that something needed to be done about the fact that women often found it harder to realise their potential than men - something that was seemingly caused by a difference in attitude and confidence as opposed to a superior skill set. Named after one of the most significant art patrons of the 20th Century, Marguerite “Peggy” Guggenheim, Marguerite strives to uphold Peggy’s famous confidence, ambition and vigour — her fearlessness and her recognition of the importance of surrounding yourself by intelligent, generous and inspiring people to increase your own confidence and network. Since 2015, Marguerite has happily moved beyond the confines of Joanna’s living room, now hosting events with the likes of: museum directors including Maria Balshaw (Tate) and Nicholas Cullinan (The National Portrait Gallery); artists, Sir Michael Craig-Martin and Idris Khan OBE; Founders of Frieze, Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp; fashion designers, Dame Zandra Rhodes and Victoria Beckham; and photographers, Rankin and Nick Knight. Our 300-strong membership base is made up female art world professionals who work across art, design, fashion and photography and share a strong desire to lift each other up rather than hold each other back.
